Last week, we have published a post titled ‘Twitter may tweak 140 character limit by excluding photos and links’. Post was based on report of Bloomberg. Earlier, Twitter declined to comment on it but now officially, Twitter has published on its official blog about the same.
In last few months, Twitter has added lots of new features like Polls, GIFs, Periscope broadcasts and many more in Tweets. As of now, we can able to do so many things with short tweet. Now, Twitter is not going to count valuable characters for @names in replies and media attachments like photos, GIFs, videos, and polls which will encourage people to express more things in 140 character Tweet.
Let’s understand about these new updates in more detail:
@names will no longer count into 140-character count of Tweet, when you reply to any Tweet. According to Twitter, this will make Twitter conversations more easy and convenient.
Media attachments like photos, GIFs, videos or polls take up approximately 24 characters as of now. Once update will be rolled out, Twitter will not count them as characters within your Tweet. It will encourage users to share more media files on Twitter.
Apart from above updates, Twitter is also planning to roll out two new features:
1) Retweet and Quote Tweet Yourself:
Twitter is going to enable retweet button on your own Tweets which will allow to Retweet or Quote Tweet yourself when you want to add something new to your Tweet or you feel your Tweet didn’t get any attention.
2) Goodbye, @:
It will not be required to use ”.@” convention as new Tweets that begin with a username will reach to all your followers. People can also able to retweet their replies so they can be viewed by more people.
According to Twitter, these updates will be rolled out for both desktop and mobile users over upcoming months.
